The Last Ice - A Sip for the Future

Embark on a transformative trek to Mount Kenya, where a sip of glacier ice sparks a global conversation on climate change

The Cause

The retreat of Mount Kenya’s glaciers is not just a local issue—it’s a vivid illustration of the global climate crisis. Recent studies indicate that African glaciers have lost as much as 80% of their volume since the early 20th century, and Mount Kenya’s ice caps are no exception. As global temperatures continue to rise, these ice reserves are melting at an alarming rate, with some projections warning that many of these glaciers could vanish within the next 30 to 50 years.

This rapid decline has profound implications. The glaciers serve as natural water towers, regulating water supplies for millions of people in the region. Their loss jeopardizes local ecosystems, agriculture, and water security, and contributes to wider climate disruptions, including altered weather patterns and rising sea levels. Globally, glaciers are retreating at an average rate of nearly 9 meters per decade—a stark reminder that our planet's cooling systems are in peril.

Every melting glacier is a signal of the broader consequences of unchecked carbon emissions and unsustainable practices. The fate of Mount Kenya’s ice caps underscores the urgency of transforming our environmental policies and adopting sustainable solutions. The Last Ice is about more than witnessing nature’s transformation—it’s a call to action, urging us to confront climate change head-on and ensure a resilient, sustainable future for all.

Why This Matters

Mount Kenya's glaciers are retreating rapidly, serving as a stark reminder of the global climate crisis. Every melting piece of ice represents a disappearing resource, a luxury we once took for granted. The Last Ice transforms this abstract issue into a personal experience—encouraging us to recognize that our everyday choices can make a difference. By “Sipping the Last Ice” you can spark vital conversations and drive sustainable action before it's too late.

How we are taking Action

At The Last Ice, our Mount Kenya trek is just the beginning—a powerful symbol to kickstart the climate conversation. We’re committed to taking this discussion directly to the grassroots across the country through a series of action-driven initiatives. For example, we’re organizing interactive climate fairs and community dialogues to spark local conversations about sustainability. We’re launching tree planting and reforestation campaigns in urban and rural areas to restore local ecosystems, alongside regular clean-up drives in neighborhoods and waterways to promote environmental stewardship. In addition, we’re partnering with schools and community centers to host educational workshops on renewable energy and sustainable practices, and even hosting climate hackathons to empower young innovators. By combining these on-the-ground efforts with our high-profile events, we’re transforming climate awareness into tangible action that resonates where it matters most—within our communities. Join us in turning awareness into community-driven change for a resilient, sustainable future.
